A question from America

Glen of Imaal Terrier standard says”Coat– Medium length, of harsh texture with a soft undercoat. The coat may be tidied to present a neat outline characteristic of a rough-and-ready working terrier. Over-trimming of dogs is undesirable.” What do folks think medium length is? There was talk on another site that medium is 1.5 inches. Please state your opinion, no personal comments on anyone’s breeding, dogs, or children

  1. I am certainly no expert on grooming a glen but I do prefer a slightly longer coat and I always get confused on how to groom the tail.

  2. But it isn’t working Kathy, it’s in the showring. The speed that a Glen coat grows means it is a matter of weeks from an animal that shows every desired breed point to an unholy heap of hair. A stripped out Glen and an over-trimmed one are surely two totally different things

  3. I appreciate you have to strip a Glen ( Kathy showed me how to do it, many thanks Kath). My bitch is very soft coated and i have to keep on top of it or she loose’s her waterproofness. But i must admit i think a Glen looks better with a nice coat rather than being fully stripped. I think Kath makes a valid point, the dog should be presented for what it was bred to do despite what setting it finds itself in. Its like saying straighten the legs out as they wont be needed for the draw in the ring. Glenn
