And to finish 2018…..

Glen of Imaal Terrier people are still exhibiting. Golden Spurs and Sigrid Helga at Pantcottage went over to Dublin and the trip was made worthwhile by obtaining both Green Stars with Golden Spurs Best of Breed. Congratulations

This time of year we have to do the “Oscar Speech” of thanking the directors and the producers but most of all it has to be the extras that are thanked; all the Glen of Imaal Terriers who perform effortlessly all the year to bring a bit of Glendom to everybody that meets them. They are the reason we get together on this page so thanks to them and thanks to all for sending the news, information and photographs. It couldn’t happen without you and the over 38,000 viewers of our little blog.

HAPPY 2019 TO ALL

And for the final time…..

…a shout out reminder is given about the 2018 (UK resident) Glen of Imaal Terrier Breed Survey that finishes December 31st. The year has whizzed by so fast so have you filled it in yet? It doesn’t matter whether you have a pet, a show dog or a rescue. If you have a Glen we’d like you to take a look and fill it in. It won’t take long and no personal information is taken unless you wish to leave it.

The Survey may be finishing in a couple of days (the intention is for the results to be on the breed websites-EFG and Association– by late winter/early spring) but the DNA Archive isn’t so

PLEASE SUPPORT THE GLEN DNA ARCHIVE

The International Glen DNA Archive provides a facility to store Glen DNA, along with supporting pedigree and health information, for use in future health research projects.

All you need to do to support this important health initiative, is send off five buccal (cheek) swabs from your Glen, plus a copy of your Glen’s pedigree and the submission form, to the Animal Health Trust.

To request a swab kit (one kit per Glen), please email the Animal Heath Trust: canine.genetics@aht.org.uk

Subject: Swab kit request
Name Please provide your title and first & last names
Address Please provide your full postal address including post / zip code & country
Number of kits Please indicate the number of swab kits you require (one kit per Glen)

Contributions to the DNA Archive are welcome from non-UK resident Glens, as well as those living in the UK … from Glens of all ages and health status.

For more information, please visit the dedicated Glen Archive website: www.glenarchive.com

Thank you!

Third party selling of puppies WILL be banned

The government has confirmed it will be banning third party sales of puppies and kittens, Animal Welfare Minister David Rutley announced today (23 December).

This is the full announcement . If you ever take a puppy in lieu of a stud fee you need to be aware of this. Also bear it in mind if you buy a puppy for showing and you decide pre 6months of age that it hasn’t made the grade so will be sold on.

It’s Christmas Eve…

..and a time of tradition so let’s get ready for Christmas Day tomorrow. Wherever you are have an absolutely great one. Glen of Imaal Terrier people around the world are invited to join with Conor and raise a glass around one o’clock in the afternoon. Allowing for various time zones that’ll hopefully mean that even if you are on your own you will know somebody, somewhere is thinking of you.

If you a modern sort of Glen person that doesn’t really hold with tradition all that much and has seen some surprising decisions in the exhibition ring this year this one is for you. We’re a broad church indeed in this breed so HAPPY CHRISTMAS all!!

I Challenge You

I challenge you……to find tolerance instead of criticism. Even with a breed standard as our guide we all have our own preferences which are not necessarily better than someone else’s….just different

I challenge you……to find respect instead of contempt, when a breeder says they have eye or other problems show up in a litter. Unless we identify problems we cannot prevent them destroying the breed.

I challenge you……to find the courage to protect this wonderful breed by honestly and openly offering information on possible problems that you find in your bloodlines. Only together can they be overcome.

I challenge you……to embrace the fellowship of Glens. We are a diverse group with different ideas on many things who have come together for the love of the breed. Listen to one another. Debate with one another. Learn from one another. Together educate truthfully all who ask about this unique breed for we are the guardians of its future.

The first Open Show of 2019….

Glen Association critique

The Glen of Imaal Association Champ Show. 25/11/2018.

I was thrilled when invited to judge the club show so thank you to the committee. My steward worked hard and kept it all flowing smoothly so a big thank you to Jenny. I worry about our breed as I see more and more long straight forelegs and heavy ears but seem to be acceptable by some judges, please note these are bad faults.

What a week!

This week let’s start in America. The big Florida/Eukanuba/AKC  Cluster started lasted Tuesday with Space Coast KC of Palm Bay (another wonderful name) and the first days honours went to Kilkenny’s Across The Universe at Setanta with Abberann lament for Owen Roe Best Opposite, the two Selects Keadeen’s Sir Emmet Mingus Glas & Daulton’s Caoimhe of Pine Meadow. Brevard Kennel Club was next up and Across The Universe took the Best Opposite ribbon to Finnabair Double D Friend of a Friend. The two Selects were again Emmet and Caoimhe. Thursday was central Florida KC with Double D Best of Breed again, Caoimhe “moved up” to Best Opposite and Emmet picked up another Select along with Finnabair Shorlyne Caatskill Comedy Tonight. The finish was the 2018 AKC National Championship and friend of a Friend was once again Best of Breed with Across the Universe Best Opposite. Two Selects were (Dog) Owen Roe and (Bitch) Caoimhe.

The Helsinki Winners had Gleann Indico Indy Best of Breed with Finnabair Broc Rua Arda of Gleann Best Bitch. Best Veteran Gleann Una Noonan. On the same day the Helsinki Puppy Show was held and BOB was Gleann Kahki Kylie and BOS Gleann Kooky Kanye. The Finnish Winners on the following day saw BOB going to Pearytail Bonnie B Goode and BOS to Gleann Flatbone Stiubhard. Another Puppy Show was held and Kooky Kanye was BOB and then waved to a very nice indeed 4th place in the Puppy Group. Best Opposite to him was Meomodo Divas Dancing Angel. The Swedish Winners was a triumph for Cairdiulacht Daibhi MacMiolmor and BOS (plus Swedish Veteran Winner) was Gleann Una Noonan.Glenrosedale Banríon Rós Croí made the journey to Russia and returned with two Best of Breeds and her Russian Championship

Ladies Kennel Association saw Boudivella Osca finish off a good year with Best of Breed and Sigrid Helga at Pantcottage was Best Bitch. When it is your first dog, your first show and you take home the Best Puppy rosette it’s a fair bet a new exhibitor may have been born; welcome Doug The Dog aka Borderglen Michaelmas.

The “brain brigade” were also out in force, even at the Agility Invitational in Florida.  Niamh was competing there and earned the Top in Breed Medallion for Glens.  She was also awarded the Top Agility Glen of Imaal Terrier for 2017.Elsewhere Jeff Dairiki reports ” Ciarán went six for six in the Masters ring this weekend at the RiverRat Barn Hunt trials, just earning his RATCHX8! He tied in points for the special Master Super Dog award for the weekend, but lost in the rat-off to Lisa Bennett’s Airedale, Oakley”. Griffin and Winston are just exhausting to read about sometimes as Kelli writes ” Griffin and Winston trialled in AKC Scent Work this weekend and earned 3 new scent work titled total. Griffin received 6 qualifying  in Advanced  Scent Work (3 in buried, 1 in exterior and 2 and interior with placements)  Griffin also earned his Advanced Buried title. Winston earned 6 qualifying scores in Advanced Scent Work ( 2 in buried, 2 in exterior, 1 in container and 1 in interior) Winston earned 2 Scent work titles in Advanced Interiors and Buried along with placements. I can’t remember who earned which placements though! Monique sends news of Ginny in both Agility and Scent work “Ginny qualified and placed first in her Excellent Jumpers Preferred class at an AKC Agility trial on Saturday. On Sunday she qualified in all 4 element classes (Intermediate & Advanced levels) at a USCSS Scent Work trial and earned a title in Intermediate Interior.”

Whatever they are doing Glen of Imaal Terrier people are just astounding!!
