Have you got it? If your Glen of Imaal Terrier, cat, ferret, rabbit gets out on the road and causes an accident are you covered by insurance. What if any of the above inadvertently scratch somebody and they decide to sue you….are you ready? Quite a few Glen folk in the UK twitch when the name of Dog’s Trust comes up due to their habit of shipping in from Ireland and telling us that our help is not needed but grit the teeth and have a look at their membership offer.

“3rd party public liability insurance for your dog – up to £1,000,000 per claim if your dog causes damage or injury to another person, their property or pets” and notice that the dog doesn’t have to be named. It’s only £12.50 a year (£25 if under 60) so well worth doing the way everything is getting so litigatious

If anybody wants to shout at the television that well known dog lover Jeremy Vine is discussing “should Crufts crack down on flat faced dogs?”. 9.15am on Channel 5 or catch up later in the day on My5.

This blog is public service broadcasting for Glen of Imaal Terrier people. Crufts is next week and everybody used to have a new outfit so to that end a Facebook public group is being shared for any interested ladies. “Dog Show Jackets Sales and Swapsies” is evidently worth looking at.

Slightly Different Angle now

Back on February 6th a “Surviving Dog Shows” post was on here. Today we’re running a slightly different approach on it all that obviously appeals as three separate folk sent it for sharing:-

If you talk about dogs, you’re a know-it-all; if you don’t, you’re a snob…
If you don’t stop to chat at a show, success has gone to your head; if you do, you’re a show off…
If your dogs are at all the shows, you’re not letting others have a chance; if your dogs aren’t at all the shows, you’re afraid of the competition…
If your dog wins, you know the judges; if they don’t win, you know nothing about breeding…
If you win and thank the judge, you’re playing politics; if you win and don’t thank the judge, you’re rude…
If you lose and congratulate the winner, you’re a hypocrite; if you lose and don’t congratulate the winner, you’re a poor sport…
If you’ve been breeding for less than 20 years, you’re a novice; if you’ve been breeding for more than 20 years, you should step down and let the newcomers have a chance…
If you use your own stud, you’re kennel blind; if you go outside for stud services, you don’t think much of your own breeding…
If you sell most of your puppies, they aren’t good enough to keep; if you keep them, you can’t find buyers….”

The Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement for the final quarter of 2018 is out. Glen of Imaal Terriers registered 48 for the year, exactly the same as 2017. Somebody, somewhere (as Crufts is here soon) will attempt to get a few lines in the press about “Vulnerable Breeds” and as Glens are in the bottom five of registration figures they may decide to use us. After the debacle of the “rare as giant pandas” year and managing to get that headline off the BBC website when we proved it was false the request went to the Kennel Club NOT to use Glens again and, up to yet, they have been as good as their word but time has passed and people in the KC Press Department have moved on.

Let’s do figures. Four litters were born late on last year that didn’t make the BRS, and Glens don’t generally one have singleton pups. Already this year four bitches have been-or are about to be-mated. Eight litters in a few months….not a lot if you are in a numerous breed but if the Gods are smiling it’ll mean more pups than all of last year’s registration figures.

The figure that everybody needs to know and remember though is this one:12. Twelve, an imperial dozen, the number of roses in a bouquet before we went metric and the number of Glen of Imaal Terriers that needed assistance by Rescue last year. Let’s do it this way as we’re doing figures; the equivalent of 25% of last year’s entire Glen of Imaal Terrier KC registration number had problems. Does this bring home what figures can mean? Absolutely nothing, absolutely everything and already this year, just eight weeks in, five more Glen of Imaal Terriers have been have been notified to Rescue.

Glens may be on the KC Vulnerable Breed list but they are not for everybody. They are not a breed that is cute. They are not fur babies. They are not a dog to be owned on a whim and are most certainly not a breed to take on unless you know what you are doing and what a Glen is. It’s appreciated that not many know that much about Glens so BREED BUDDIES (Here To Help) has been launched this year and the Glen of Imaal Quiz is designed to make you think.

Westminster….and other shows

We got the photo…and the video…and the videos. Let’s do Glen of Imaal Terriers once more at Westminster. Best of Breed was Abberann Lament for Owen Roe with Best Opposite going to Kilkenny’s Across The Universe at Setanta. Select was Ber-D-Mar sweet William O’Shea with AOM Tipperary Ballyfinboy Liam of Cnoc. The breed judging is online and so is Niamh’s agility round at around 2hrs 8mins and here at 6hrs 23mins. Niamh, by the way is GCH PACH Niamh of Cnoc CD PCD BN RE MXP10 MXPC MJP7 MJPG PAX2 MFP T2BP JE RATCH CGCA TKI

Also in the States at Lakeland Winter Haven KC Finnabair DD Ain’t It The Life was BOB with Long Lake Pharms Angus Fuller Best Dog. Over in Iowa Kilkenny’s Across The Universe at Setanta followed her Westminster win with a Group 4 at Cyclone County on both the Saturday and Sunday and at Maryland KC Finnabair Shorlyne Caatskill Comedy Tonight was Best of Breed at OHG3.

In Norway at Bo International Finnabair North American Nebulon took BOB on the first day with Rosears Noisy Nancy Best Opposite. Noisy Nancy was again Best Opposite on day 2 but Marfidal Pleasant Surprise took Best of Breed. In Valmiera, Latvia, Meomodo Boho’s Trick or Treat took BOB both days and then capped it all off with a splendid Group 2!

Breeding licences in the UK

The Kennel Club has been working with Our Dogs newspaper on a survey about dog breeding licences. Concerns had been heard from many breeders and local authorities about how the new licensing guidance for dog breeding in England is being applied. The guidance is complex and, from what we understand so far, areas of it are being misunderstood and applied inconsistently.

We want to survey people to find out their experience of applying for a licence in order that we can feed this information back to Defra. The more people who fill in the survey, the better, so we would urge all dog breeders to participate and tell their dog-breeding friends to do likewise, whether pedigree or crossbreed, so we can get as clear a picture of the situation as possible.
